Be Your Own Thing

Over the weekend Saturday Night Live gifted us with David S Pumpkins. This quirky, endearing and very funny sketch features a couple exposed to “100 Floors of Fright,” not all of which, the ride operator explains, are going to be winners.

One of the first things a person in recovery from drugs and alcohol learns is the importance of being true to self. In the rooms of AA this idea is so important they put it on the back of every “chip” or coin: to thine own self-be true.

People in recovery have to relearn social. How to watch sports, dance at a wedding, go out on a date sober. Early in sobriety people have to brave the barrage of questions that comes with abstaining.

As we enter the Holiday season remind yourself when asked “what, you’re not drinking? Why not?” that it is perfectly acceptable to channel a little Tom Hanks goofiness and lightheartedly remind yourself that you are your own thing. You’re not defined by the drink or the drug and you don’t have to do anything that doesn’t feel right.
