Chronic Relapse & How Extended Care Can Help

It has been a hell of a week. When I struggle, I reeeaaaally struggle. Things tend to go so bad so fast when I use and yet, I still want to. I’ve thought about treatment but I don’t know that these support groups are really for me, since I’ve already tried so many other types of treatment. I hate being the talker, you know, the person who always says one thing and does the other. Only thing worse is this “will they, won't they finally stop using” limbo my family has adopted as my normal, like I’m incapable of anything other than starting recovery and never finishing. Will I finally do it or am I still just talking about it? It just gets so tiring to always be “quitting”. I’ve been “quitting” using alcohol for years now… but nothing ever just works.

If you find yourself or a loved one feeling or sounding this way, then keep in mind they are not alone. Chronic relapse is an all too common and real problem within the community of those trying to recover. 40 to 60% of those with a substance use disorder have or will relapse. That does not mean treatment isn’t working.

Many times, we feel guilt, remorse, shame for these things and it heightens the problem. We hear patients regularly say that they have tried multiple treatment centers and yet nothing has worked. This could be because they haven’t found a treatment that fits them or address their chronic relapse issue.

We know when it comes to addiction treatment that there is a wide variety of types of treatment and a wide variety of places to receive it. Not all treatment centers or treatment types are created equal. It can be a lot to take in and there can be a lot of wavering on what is the best option.

If you’re looking for treatment options for yourself or a family member, it is critical to know the types available and consider the best treatment option while working alongside specialists well versed in matching the care you need with your particular case. The main types of addiction treatment that most people seek are:

Each type has its own special features and considerations. In order for a treatment to be considered effective, it needs to recognize that no single treatment is right for everyone, the treatment must also treat any other underlying mental health conditions, and it must address all other needs of the patient. Keeping this in mind when searching for treatment options is crucial.

Another thing to remember when selecting treatment for yourself or someone you love is that excellent treatment has a series of steps and is not one size fits all. Typically, the most effective programs tend to go through a series of steps which can include some of the types we listed above like detox and MAT.

Within Oregon, the most common type of treatment is outpatient which is offered at over 89% of treatment facilities. Residential treatment on the other hand is only offered at 17% of facilities and only 33 facilities across the state offer long term residential options. Serenity Lane is proud to be a part of the network of facilities that offers both residential AND outpatient.

We realize that each type of treatment can be so vastly different at each type of center, so let’s take a look at one of our specialized treatment programs for Chronic Relapse: Extended Stay Residential Treatment.

Extended Stay

Licensed residential addiction treatment facilities offer structured care, including safe housing and medical attention. These types of facilities may use a variety of approaches, and generally, they help patients live a healthy lifestyle during and after treatment. Extended residential is similar but has some pretty distinct differences.

What is Extended Stay Residential?

Extended Stay Residential is different from standard residential care in an obvious way and some not so obvious ways. This treatment is longer than most residential programs that are about 30 days long. This is important because research has found that extended duration treatment is more effective at improving long term recovery than shorter programs.

Also, the National Institute on Drug Abuse suggests most people who are addicted need at least 3 months in treatment to reduce or stop their drug use.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration the people who may benefit the most from this style of treatment are those with:

  • severe risk of withdrawal
  • medical conditions
  • mental health issues
  • trouble achieving recovery in other types of treatment
  • trouble with chronic relapse

unstable home environments

It’s relatively easy to understand why some of these attributes could lead to a more complicated recovery process. We can see that these factors can impact a person's recovery. For example, certain home environments could lead to chronic relapse if there is temptation or extremely high stress.

These extended programs are also typically filled with more lessons on living healthy lifestyles than other programs.

The ways that these programs help encourage healthy lifestyles can vary, but, generally, they will have a focus on helping attendees develop effective coping strategies, improve communication and relationship-building skills, and learn to love themselves. They also spend time focusing on why chronic relapse is occurring and how to address it in a healthy way.

A major benefit of extended care treatment is the flexibility it offers. This allows a person to reintegrate back into everyday life while providing the necessary tools for long term recovery and success.

A person receiving treatment at Serenity Lane will receive acute treatment in a residential or inpatient setting and get the vital care they need. Afterward, reintegration begins. We then focus on improving health through activities like exercise and yoga, reintegrating socially into the community, and learning important life skills like cooking.

Our Extended Residential Programs can also include:

  • outpatient therapy sessions
  • support group meetings
  • medication management
  • mental health counseling
  • family counseling

In our program, participants will confront the numerous cognitive and spiritual blocks that are keeping them from moving on. Family sessions, in one-on-one settings and group sessions, are included in the program. Internal studies on the success of our program have found 84% of patients report being sober a year after completing treatment. Having the attributes listed above doesn’t mean that there isn’t support out there for you or your loved one. No matter what the case may be, we are here to help. The results of our program at Serenity Lane, here in Oregon, speak for themselves. They demonstrate a very high success rate of recovery for those patients who complete their prescribed course of treatment.
