“Dual diagnosis” is the term used when a person experiences both a mental health issue, such as depression, and a substance use disorder at the same time. When someone knows how drugs affect their body, they become an expert at masking their pain. This kind of veiled pain can come from pre-existing mental health conditions. The most common mental health conditions among Oregonians are:
As time goes on, alcohol and drug addiction are interwoven with these pre-existing problems. When a person is seeking treatment, they must understand the effects their prior experiences have on their recovery. Many Oregonians have not seen the whole picture beyond the addiction. According to DualDiagnosis.gov, 1 in every 4 individuals suffers from a mental health disorder once in their lifetime. Treating addiction isn’t a simple one-size-fits-all solution, it has many layers. Dual diagnosis, also known as co-occurring disorders, is a combination of mental/emotional issues mixed with substance misuse. To help a person recover, we must treat both issues.
Loved ones and friends often want to seek help but may not know how. Helping a loved one or friend through a rough patch could likely lead to their full recovery. Our outcomes data has shown 35% of clients had family involved in their treatment program. Lower the likelihood of relapse by showing up when it matters the most.

These few mental health issues coupled with substance use means typical symptoms of dual diagnosis could be:
Oregon has always suffered from high rates of illicit drug use. In the midst of the pandemic, the Kaiser Family Foundation said that as overdoses increased, so did mental health issues. They reported 26.7% of adults in Oregon suffer from anxiety or depressive disorder and haven’t sought treatment. Oregonians are suffering at a higher rate than the 24.2% national average.
