“The goal is to love yourself so much that you don’t need to drink.”

- Anonymous

In 2022, nearly 500,000 Oregon residents reported having an alcohol use disorder, with over 32,000 of them being people under the age of 21.

People with alcohol use disorder (AUD) not only face misunderstanding about their condition but also live in a society where alcohol is deeply ingrained in many aspects of life. It can seem daunting to take that first step towards healing when you worry about judgment and triggers on top of cravings and withdrawal.

So what’s the solution?

Finding a community that understands and encourages you plays a large role in making recovery long-lasting and worthwhile. At Serenity Lane, our team and large alumni network are dedicated to you and your journey forward. The first step to this monumental chapter in your life should be a good one.

That’s where alcohol detox comes into play.

What We Treat: Alcohol Use Disorders

When people think about physical dependency, many think it’s synonymous with having a substance or alcohol use disorder. In reality, it’s far more complex than that.

Our bodies are very efficient. When a substance is introduced, the body will eventually adapt to that substance’s presence. In the case of alcohol, this includes interacting with sleep function, mood, and cognition.

In response to the continued and frequent presence of alcohol, the brain will alter how it controls those parts of your system. When you then stop drinking, your brain and body have to readjust to the lack of alcohol. This process and the associated symptoms are known as withdrawal.

What Symptoms of Alcohol Withdrawal Need Treatment?

When it comes to withdrawal from any substance, there are always going to be symptoms. What changes is how long they last and how severe they are. Some symptoms can be so mundane or benign that you might not initially realize that they’re linked with withdrawal. That is not the case when it comes to alcohol withdrawal. In some instances, it can be easy to mistake alcohol withdrawal with a hangover. However, depending on the timing of it and how long it lasts, it becomes clear quickly that what you’re experiencing isn’t a hangover. Alcohol withdrawal, as a whole, is an uncomfortable experience, but it has the potential to turn deadly. This is primarily due to a condition known as delirium tremens. The symptoms of delirium tremens include:
  • Increased irritability
  • Fever
  • Rapid or irregular breathing
  • Rapid or abnormal heart rate
  • Sudden and severe confusion
  • Tremors
  • Muscle pains
  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures

How We Treat: Medically-Guided Alcohol Detox

There are times when being “thrown into the deep end” may work out in your favor, but you shouldn’t have to do that with your health. Jumping straight into a residential program without medically-guided detox would be doing just that. You don’t have to suffer, nor do you deserve to. Detox sets you up for success from the start.

Our Coburg, Oregon facility is the only detox program in the state licensed at a level 3.7 medical detox by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). This is the highest rating possible for residential treatment. This means that not only are our facilities, treatment options, and staff top-notch, but our ideology and approach to your recovery are, too. Through ASAM, our rating is indicative of our person-centered approach to healing.

Our detox program is here because we recognize the importance of detox and medical support at the start of any recovery journey.

Is a Medical Detox Necessary for Alcohol Withdrawal?

While many of the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal can be managed from home, that doesn’t mean that you should. If you want to start the recovery journey, beginning in a medical detox program immediately sets you up on the right path and with the right tools.

Additionally, a medical detox program helps you stay safe. Not only do you have trained medical staff on hand to watch out for and manage severe symptoms, should they arise, but they also address the less severe symptoms, too. Just because the other symptoms of alcohol withdrawal aren’t life-threatening doesn’t mean they’re pleasant.

The trained and licensed medical team working with you while you’re in detox deeply understands how alcohol interacts with the body and how withdrawal presents as a result. They’re there with the sole intention of making you safe and comfortable while putting you in an environment designed for recovery.

What Our Alumni Are Saying

Understanding the Risks of Alcohol Withdrawal

Alcohol withdrawal can start as soon as 8 hours after your last drink but can also take days to start. The specific timeline will vary depending on your history with alcohol use, other forms of substance use, and your overall health. Once symptoms begin, they usually last 3-7 days. Some may experience a variety of symptoms that last longer than that, which is known as protracted withdrawal.

Because of this time frame, people can get through most of the withdrawal and incorrectly assume they’re “in the clear.” Delirium tremens, which stems directly from alcohol withdrawal, don’t always appear as quickly as the other symptoms of withdrawal. While they most often start 4 days after your last drink, they can take up to 10 days before symptoms appear.

This is why withdrawing from alcohol without medical help is risky. You won’t know if you’ll experience delirium tremens until it happens, and it could happen at any time.

What Do You Do After Alcohol Detox?

Here at Serenity Lane, our medical team works alongside you to ensure you understand your treatment options and the road ahead. We don’t want to leave you in the dark, so you’ll know what will happen during and after your detox from the start.

For the vast majority of people who walk through our doors, detox goes hand in hand with our residential treatment program. In fact, many people start treatment before their detox time is completed. The exact timeline of your stay, from detox to residential, will vary depending on your needs.

In some cases, people may choose to instead start in our outpatient programming. Outpatient programs are often used after residential care as a transition period between being on-site all the time and being at home again. However, the exact “pipeline” of treatment isn’t a one-way street. People’s needs change over time, so there are times when you may move to a more intensive treatment from a less intensive one, and vice versa.

The most important part of your treatment and recovery journey is honesty with yourself and others. We all go through periods in our lives that are rougher than others, and you don’t need to go through it alone. There’s never shame in leaning on the support and love of those who care about you.
