Substance use often makes the world feel bleak. It makes it hard to want to approach others for support and love. It can make us feel alone, lost, isolated, or filled with many other negative emotions like rage and fear. While addiction has outward side effects such as needle marks, bloodshot eyes, or vomiting, it’s the behavioral and mental side effects that aren’t always fully addressed during recovery.
This is where a more well-rounded healing process that not only gives you the core components of addiction treatment but also offers that additional balm to soothe the soul, can be so pivotal.
Substance use disorders are rarely sustained without a reason. Things like stress, untreated mental health conditions, trauma, and other things usually come into play, too. With over 730,000 adults in Oregon managing a mental health condition, we know this is also a concern for our patients, and it goes hand-in-hand with a need for spirituality.

You gave me my wife back. First Serenity Lane saved her life and then the continued recovery program gave her one. ~Jeff
Addiction leads to the downfall of other aspects of our lives. While spirituality can come with different definitions for each individual, a connection to something that is meaningful and inspiring to you is so often lost when addiction is present.
As the oldest, non-profit rehab center in the state, we at Serenity Lane recognize that addiction is not just something that impacts the body – it is also deeply rooted in your psyche as well. Our approach to healing works beyond conventional methods, by embracing the power of spiritual connection to better support profound and lasting recovery.
The Spiritual Care program at Serenity Lane is committed to supporting the Serenity Lane community in connecting to that which is meaningful and sacred in life. Our program is interfaith, recovery-focused, culturally responsive, and designed for personal exploration.
The goal of the Spiritual Care program is not to force ideals onto people but rather to meet them where they are in their personal, spiritual development. Every client’s journey is unique and personal to them. Our program works to acknowledge spiritual development and teach clients about resources and rituals that are adaptable to the beliefs and practices of all people. The purpose of the program is to support addiction recovery, while not expressly dictating exactly what spiritual development means for any one individual.
Did you know that detox is often considered necessary care for those with a substance use disorder by insurance companies?

Addiction is not a one-dimensional issue, and our clients come from diverse demographics, too. When someone is managing a substance use disorder, it impacts multiple areas of their life, and it impacts everyone differently. This includes everything from relationships to their own well-being, mentally and physically. Why then do some addiction treatment programs only address part of these concerns, or think that a one-track program will help address everyone’s unique needs?
When clients walk into our doors seeking help, we want to make sure they receive well-rounded care that addresses all of their concerns, even the ones they don’t realize they have. We currently offer a Native talking circle with Red Road, 12-step meetings, Refuge Recovery, and Celebrate Recovery options. Our Spiritual Center also includes programs for people who aren’t looking for a religious aspect, too. We’re supportive of all faith traditions.
More often than not, the first step in the addiction treatment process is detox. Put your trust in our proven track record and begin your journey to sobriety.
Addiction is isolating and emotionally exhausting, and it can take a toll on the soul. Taking the time to address concerns like loneliness, depression, anxiety, and even smaller concerns like fears and uncomfortable memories, helps clients heal in more ways than one. This is what our spirituality programs are for.

The Dwight Lee Spiritual Center, named after a man who served as the Spiritual Advisor at Serenity Lane for many years, opened its doors in 2022. It is located in the heart of Serenity Lane’s, 15-acre, Coburg campus. It serves as a means to enhance the already existing Spiritual Care program and addresses the need for sacred and adaptable practices that support personal growth and spiritual development across religious traditions and spiritual beliefs.
In 2025, the Spiritual Center will be expanded upon with the addition of a new labyrinth, which will continue to provide space for patients and staff a way to embody meditation, reflection, and ritual, and will represent the journeying that is a distinct way to travel spiritually in recovery.

What exactly is our process? How do we utilize spiritual development and philosophy?
Spiritual development addresses many issues that are key to addiction recovery. Those who are managing addiction often experience things such as isolation, obsessive thoughts, feelings of failure and suffering, self-centeredness, and more. It impacts many aspects of the psyche, and spiritual development seeks to address these concerns while soothing the frayed edges.
The process of spiritual development helps us connect not only with ourselves, but with the things around us such as nature, other people, and an individual’s higher power. Spiritual exploration includes practices like prayer and meditation and works to help make sense of some of the negative emotions and experiences we all face as humans such as suffering, regret, and failure.
