WE ADMIT 7 DAYS A WEEK
Same day admissions possible - Most insurance accepted

Every year it's recommended that people get a physical check-up to keep an eye on your health, and to give you time to ask your doctor questions about things that may have been concerning to you. If we do this regularly with our physical health, why don’t we also do it with our mental health?

Mental health can fluctuate during your lifetime. Whether you just go through a rough period, or you’ve been managing something like depression for years, there’s no shame in wanting or needing help from a professional. We don’t know all the answers in life right off the bat. By seeking help for your mental health you can learn the skills you need to properly manage it on your own.

As the oldest non-profit rehabilitation center in the state, our team at Serenity Lane has seen exactly how much mental health plays a role in recovery over the years. We believe everyone deserves a space where they can seek help for their mental health, but what exactly does that entail? When should someone seek help for their mental health?

Did you know that detox is often considered necessary care for those with a substance use disorder by insurance companies?

The Importance of Mental Health Treatment in Substance Use Recovery

comprehensive-mental-health-services-overview

Substance use and mental health concerns are often two sides of the same coin. People who are dealing with untreated mental health conditions turn to substance use to manage their side effects. Substance use impacts our behavior and brain chemistry, leading to developing or worsening mental health conditions.

When seeking recovery, it’s important to address every component of a person. If mental health was part of the reason someone started substance use, you must address it alongside their substance use. Our brains and bodies are very complex, and many conditions play into one another. Being aware of this during treatment is very important to give clients the extensive care they need and deserve.

Break Free!

More often than not, the first step in the addiction treatment process is detox. Put your trust in our proven track record and begin your journey to sobriety.

What Is a “Dual Diagnosis?”

It’s a term that refers to someone who is managing both a substance use disorder and mental health concerns at the same time.

There is no one combination that defines a dual diagnosis. One client might be managing PTSD and alcohol use, while another is managing depression and an opioid use disorder. The key component of dual diagnosis treatment is properly identifying an individual's unique concerns and setting up a treatment plan that addresses all of them.

What Our Alumni Are Saying

What Are the Common Causes of Mental Health Concerns?

accessing-mental-health-support-options

As mentioned earlier, substance use often plays a large role in someone’s mental health – but it’s not the only source of mental health concerns.

Our mental health is greatly influenced by everything around us. This includes our home life, relationships, financial stability, stressors, physical health, and more. Let’s take a look at some of these factors in a little more detail.

  • Family history - The way we are raised plays a major role in our mental health development. If you grew up with a relative who had depression or a substance use disorder, it has a lasting impact. If you experience any physical or emotional neglect, this can also impact your mental health. Additionally, any unrest your family might have experienced, like divorce or financial instability, can also impact the development of your mental health.
  • Stressors and stability - The world around us can easily influence our overall mental health. This includes our relationships with others, our work and school life, financial stability, safety, and more.
  • Physical health - Our brains are greatly affected by our overall health. Even little things like proper sleep, exercise, and nutrition can alter our mood. Long periods of being sedentary can lead to feelings of depression. Sickness and injury can contribute to things like low sleep and sedentary habits. When our brain is worried about nutrition, energy levels, and basic survival it doesn’t have the energy to dedicate to emotional regulation.
  • Trauma - Experiencing trauma can contribute to many mental health conditions such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Trauma can happen at any age and no two people will react to a traumatic situation the same. While listing every potential example of a traumatic situation would take up pages worth of text, we can give some of the most common scenarios. Things such as car accidents, sudden loss of life, sexual assault, wartime experiences, domestic violence, and childhood abuse are often the source of trauma.

How Do You Know When to Seek Treatment for Your Mental Health?

When you’re dealing with a mental health condition, it can sometimes feel like the things you’re dealing with aren’t “serious enough” to warrant treatment. It can be easy to convince yourself that “others have it worse,” or “it’s only bad sometimes,” but there’s something else you should keep in mind.

More than one person can experience hardship at the same time without invalidating each other. It’s not a competition to see who “has it worse.” We all have different situations and different ways we react and manage those situations.

Even if it’s only bad sometimes, it’s still bad when it is. You deserve to know how to manage the bad moments when they do happen.

If you feel like you need help, even if it’s a fleeting thought, then you deserve to have access to it. There isn’t a set list of requirements needed to “qualify” for mental health treatment.
