About us

WE ADMIT 7 DAYS A WEEK
Same day admissions possible - Most insurance accepted

Serenity Lane is a licensed, non-profit addiction treatment provider serving Oregon communities since 1973 with a full continuum of care – from medically supervised detox and residential treatment to outpatient programs across the state.

Oregon currently has a 49% gap in substance use disorder services, meaning nearly half of the people who need treatment in this state can't access it. That gap has existed for decades, and it's exactly why Serenity Lane was built.

At Serenity Lane, we've spent over 50 years working to close that gap. One person, one family, one community at a time. We admit 7 days a week, same-day admissions are possible, and we're here 24/7. Recovery is possible. We've seen it thousands of times.

Our Mission and Vision

Serenity Lane exists for one reason. To help people get their lives back. That mission shapes every decision we make – from how we staff our clinical teams to how we design our aftercare programs.

  • Mission: To transform lives through the treatment of addiction. We are committed to excellent patient care, the dignity and worth of every client and their family, and empowering people to grow in their recovery.
  • Vision: To enable individuals and families to achieve lifelong recovery; to become the people they aspire to be, and dedicate themselves to serving others in recovery

These are the standards we hold ourselves to every day. Measured through outcomes data, client feedback, and the accountability that comes from being a non-profit whose only job is helping people recover.

Credentials and Accreditations

Choosing a treatment provider is one of the most consequential decisions a person can make. Credentials and accreditation are the clearest way to verify that a program meets an independent standard of quality, not just its own.

  • CARF Accreditation: Accreditation is how a treatment program demonstrates its quality to an external body.  All of Serenity Lane's programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) – one of the most rigorous independent accreditation bodies in behavioral healthcare. CARF examines our assessment and referral programs, residential programs, long-term residential treatment, and outpatient programs.
  • Licensure: Licensure goes a step further. It is the actual legal authorization to provide specific types of care, held to state standards. Serenity Lane has been licensed as a Medical Detox facility treating addiction since 1973. We are the only treatment center in Oregon fully licensed as a Detox Medical Center to provide medical withdrawal support, with a professional medical staff and 24-hour nursing care on our Coburg campus.

CARF accreditation isn't a one-time achievement. It's a commitment we renew continuously. For clients and families evaluating their options, it's one of the most meaningful signals that a program takes accountability seriously.

Milestones and History

Serenity Lane's history is, in many ways, Oregon's history of addiction treatment. We've been here through every shift in the field – from the early days of residential care to the integration of mental health treatment, medication-assisted therapy, and the development of Oregon's counselor training infrastructure.

Serenity Lane addiction treatment Family Center

  3. Program innovation: Serenity Lane pioneered residential step-down and outpatient integration programs in Oregon long before they became standard in the field.
  4. Oregon's only Addiction Counselor Training Program: Serenity Lane has operated the only Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program in the state, with graduates working in treatment programs across the United States.

More than 50 years in, Serenity Lane remains what it has always been: a non-profit organization whose sole purpose is helping people recover.

Leadership Team

Serenity Lane's clinical and operational leadership brings together decades of experience across addiction medicine, behavioral health, clinical operations, nursing, and public service.

Many of our leaders have personal connections to the mission. Including President and CEO Pete Kerns, son of founder Dr. Thomas A. Kerns, who has spent over three decades in public service before returning to lead the organization his father built. That kind of connection shapes not just how our leaders lead, but how they show up for clients every day.

Core Values

Serenity Lane's core values aren't a mission statement footnote. They are operational. And they show up in how we staff our programs, how we involve families, and how we stay accountable to the people who trust us with their care.

  1. Dignity first: Every client and family is treated with respect and compassion, without judgment, from intake through discharge and beyond
  2. Whole-person care: Addiction does not usually exist in isolation. Clinical treatment, mental health support, spirituality, and holistic wellness are integrated at every level of care
  3. Accountability: CARF accreditation, ongoing outcomes tracking, and transparent quality standards keep us honest and keep our programs effective
  4. Community: Serenity Lane exists to serve Oregon. That means accessible care, modest pricing, and a genuine commitment to the communities where our clients live and work
  5. Spiritual care: Recovery touches the whole person. Serenity Lane's Spiritual Care Philosophy reflects our belief that spirituality is a meaningful part of lasting recovery for many clients
  6. Continuity: Treatment doesn't end at discharge. Our Serenity for Life alumni program keeps clients connected long after they leave

These values have guided this organization since 1973. They're the reason our staff stays, our alumni come back, and our clients trust us with the hardest chapters of their lives.

Outcomes

Serenity Lane has been tracking treatment outcomes since 1986, decades before it became standard practice in the behavioral health field. We believe accountability to the people we serve means measuring what actually happens after treatment, not just what happens during it.

Key areas tracked across our outcome studies include:

  • Successful sustained sobriety
  • Management of cravings
  • Client experience and respectful treatment
  • Long-term recovery stability

The full dataset, spanning 1986 to 2023, is available for direct download.

Results matter – but publishing them matters more. Outcome tracking is how we hold ourselves to a standard that goes beyond accreditation and how prospective clients and referring providers can evaluate us based on evidence, not just reputation.

What Sets Us Apart

There are good treatment options in Oregon. Here's what consistently sets Serenity Lane apart and why clients, families, and referring providers have trusted us for over five decades.

  • Over 50 years of experience – Oregon’s Largest Nonprofit Drug & Alcohol Treatment Provider Since 1973
  • Oregon's only fully licensed Medical Detox Center – 24-hour nursing care and physician oversight on our Coburg campus
  • CARF-accredited – All programs meet rigorous independent standards for quality, safety, and clinical care
  • Full continuum of care – Detox through long-term outpatient; clients don't have to start over when their needs change
  • Dual diagnosis integrated – Mental health and substance use treated together, not in sequence
  • Family-centered – One of the most comprehensive family programs in Oregon, with structured programming every weekend
  • Outcomes-backed – Decades of independently tracked data, publicly available, supporting the effectiveness of our work
  • Alumni community – Serenity for Life keeps clients connected to each other and to staff long after treatment ends
  • Non-profit mission – Modest, accessible pricing because every dollar goes back into care, not into margins

Choosing a treatment center is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make. We think Serenity Lane earns that trust, and we're committed to continuing to deserve it every day.
