How Much Does Cocaine Cost?

how much does cocaine cost

You’re in college, and you’ve heard your friends talk about wanting to try different drugs, or that they’ve heard about specific drugs being available at certain parties. It’s piqued your interest. Now you’re thinking about how people get ahold of these drugs in the first place.

You’re an adult who has kids and recently you found some money missing from your belongings. You’ve had a feeling that your kid was sneaking around doing something, but is that money they stole to go out for an evening on the town, or are they doing something like buying drugs?

It’s normal for many people to have questions about substance use. No matter why you’re having these questions, our team here at Serenity Lane has a lot of experience in the world of substance use. We believe in being open and honest with the community about substance use as a whole to promote destigmatizing substance use disorders through education and non-biased information.

Nearly 3% of people in Oregon aged 12 and older reported cocaine use within the past year. This is the 7th highest-ranking state in the United States and is also higher than the national average of about 2%. There’s a chance you know someone who’s tried cocaine before or might use it regularly. If you’re outside of the world of substance use, or you’re curious if the prices you know about are common or not, you might be wondering, “How much does cocaine cost?”

Is There a Set Price for Cocaine?

The price of cocaine and other drugs varies not only from place to place but from year to year, so there is no set price for cocaine. The most “set” a price may get will be the average price notated within a year. These prices, throughout the world, are tracked by the United Nations.

What Factors Impact the Price of Cocaine?

Much like any other good in the world, it’s all about supply and demand. This means that prices can even change from day to day, especially since cocaine is not in any form of regulated market.

The most common factor that impacts the price of cocaine is how easily the person selling it can get ahold of it. What might be more easily accessible in a city might cost more in a rural area because it’s not as easily accessible. Other factors that might affect the price of cocaine include what it’s laced with, who the dealer is, purity levels, and how it was made.

The Different Prices of Cocaine

Are there different prices for different kinds of cocaine? How is it measured to determine pricing? Let’s take a look at some of the different ways that cocaine may be priced.

The Price of Cocaine by Weight

Cocaine, on average, is sold by its weight. The current recorded average price of a gram of cocaine, according to the UN, is about $120. Usually, cocaine is not sold in kilograms, as that is 1000x more than a gram.

There is one form of cocaine that is more often sold in kilos. This is known as cocaine hydrochloride. It is the chemical form of cocaine and was most recently reported as being sold for over $30,000 per kilo.

The Price of Cocaine by Type

There are many different terms for portions of cocaine. How exactly do these compare in cost?

  • A “bump” of cocaine - When talking about a “bump” of cocaine, this normally refers to a single “hit.” Because this is such a small amount of cocaine, the cost of it is usually very little. Sometimes dealers might even give a bump out for free so customers can try the product before buying it. It’s not a commonly sold measurement of cocaine.
  • An “8-ball” of cocaine - The term 8-ball comes from the fact that it is 1/8th of an ounce of cocaine. 1/8th of an ounce is equal to 3.5 grams of cocaine. This means currently the price of that would be about $420.

The Price Difference Between Crack and Pure Cocaine

Generally speaking, crack cocaine is cheaper than pure cocaine. Crack cocaine is a chemically modified form of cocaine that allows people to smoke it. In 2019, on average it was nearly $40 cheaper per gram for crack than for pure cocaine.

How Does the Price of Cocaine Affect Addiction?

The more easily available, both in finding a product and being able to afford it, a substance is, the higher the number of people participating in it is, generally speaking. This means that the price of cocaine can impact addiction.

It’s important to note that price is not a very high factor to consider when it comes to the complexities of addiction as a whole. Generally speaking, addiction stems from many things like stress, a bad home life, mental illness, and more. People utilize substances as a coping mechanism, though it usually doesn’t start that way.

If you know someone in your life who’s managing a cocaine addiction, or maybe you’re reading this article because it’s personal to you, we want you to know that help is always out there. Recovery is always available, no matter your history with addiction.

Whether you started taking cocaine because a friend had a bag and you all decided to try, or you heard about it while at a bar and wanted to have some excitement that night, it doesn’t matter. Oftentimes, cocaine use can start as a “fun” activity that quickly devolves into a cycle of use. This is especially true due to its short half-life in the body, meaning its effects are felt rapidly but diminish just as quickly, leaving the person feeling empty and wanting to go again.
