Cocaine Tools: How to Spot Them and What to Do if You Find Them

cocaine tools serenity lane

Do you know what objects in your house right now are commonly used for cocaine? You may know of some things, like credit cards and mirrors, because of movies and TV shows, but the list of cocaine tools is more extensive than you may realize.

Over 43,000 drug-related offenses were noted by Oregon law enforcement in the last 4 years. This can include being in possession of drug paraphernalia. Understanding more about cocaine tools, what they are, and why they’re used can help you recognize when a loved one might be in need of your help and support. Our team here at Serenity Lane hopes to continue to bring awareness regarding cocaine use disorders so people can get access to the care they need.

What Are the Most Common Tools for Cocaine Use?

Cocaine primarily comes in the form of a white powder, yet there are multiple different ways to engage with and consume it. Due to its illegal status, there are no specific, regulated, or designated tools that are used by everyone across the board. This can lead to a wider variety of random objects being utilized or adapted for cocaine use.

While the hypothetical list of objects utilized to engage with cocaine is limitless, there are several common items seen most frequently used or adapted. This is due to people sharing their finds with each other, leading to some tools becoming more popular and commonplace than others.

Let’s take a look at what tools are most frequently used for the consumption of cocaine.

Drug-Specific Tools: Crack Pipes and Snuff Bullets

Despite the illegality of engaging with substances like cocaine, you can still find drug paraphernalia such as pipes and snuff bullets at gas stations, tobacco stores, online retailers, and more. They’re frequently advertised or listed as being for tobacco or marijuana but are still often utilized for cocaine and other substances.

These products are often colorful and can be gimmicky. A loved one may say they’re just collecting it, or using it for legal products. You may feel concerned, wondering if you should believe them. It can be a scary time. This is where using other clues, which we talk about in the article, can help you find the answers you need.

Household Items Commonly Used for Cocaine: Spoons, CDs, Mirrors, and Baggies

The use of household objects is just as common, if not more so, than products found in stores. These items are quicker to obtain, easier to hide, and cheaper to use than going out and buying products specifically for cocaine.

These household objects can be used for a variety of purposes, from helping store and hide cocaine to being a part of the consumption process.

Things like lighters and spoons are commonly used for smoking cocaine. Straws, razor blades, credit cards, CDs, and mirrors may be utilized for cutting and snorting cocaine. Baggies, empty medicine bottles, and other small containers are frequently used to store cocaine. These are just a few of the most common examples. Other objects are not out of the realm of possibility for cocaine use just because they’re not on this list.

How Can You Tell if You’ve Encountered Drug Paraphernalia?

Whether listed above or not, how can you tell if an object is drug paraphernalia? Especially if it’s a household object or something that contains cocaine, it can be difficult to pinpoint. There are steps you can take to keep yourself safe while still identifying drug paraphernalia.

It may be tempting when encountering objects that you suspect are drug paraphernalia to smell or taste it to determine what it is. Tasting and smelling are not recommended in any case, including encountering baggies of an unknown powder. Both methods are common ways that people consume cocaine, and particles can get into your system when you do so. You can never be certain what is in cocaine or any unknown substances, so putting it into your system comes with risks.

The most helpful tool you can use to identify drug paraphernalia is to consider the context. This includes where it was found, the side effects your loved one is experiencing, and even the words they’re using. Those who have drug paraphernalia around will likely also showcase signs of cocaine use, even if just the short-term side effects. Knowing the street names for cocaine, as well, can help you better recognize and understand what your loved one may be going through.

Do Different Cocaine Tools Cause Unique Side Effects?

Yes, the different methods of cocaine consumption can lead to different side effects. This is primarily due to where the cocaine is ingested, leading to damage in those specific areas.

There are three primary ways to ingest cocaine: through snorting, through smoking, and through injection. The chart below highlights how each of these types can impact an individual.

Type of Cocaine Use Related Side Effects
Snorting Loss of smell, increased nosebleeds, damage to nasal lining, damage to cartilage in your nasal cavity, trouble swallowing
Smoking Increased or worsened cough, asthma, trouble breathing, higher risk of lung-related infections (i.e. pneumonia)
Injecting Increased risk of skin infection, scarring, collapsed veins, increased risk of blood-related diseases (i.e. HIV and hepatitis C)

What to Do if You Encounter Cocaine Paraphernalia

While police stations can be a safe place to drop off drug paraphernalia, it’s understandable why many might not feel that option is safe for themselves or a loved one.

The most important thing to note is that you should not just throw away or flush drugs and their related paraphernalia. This isn’t safe for the waste disposal services or good for the water and water filtration systems.

Local rehab centers can be a good option for the disposal of drug paraphernalia. Their experience with substance use gives them access to resources that the average citizen may not know of or be able to access on their own.

Additionally, you may be concerned about how to approach your loved one regarding the cocaine paraphernalia. You should speak with them about what you found, but don’t do so immediately. Take a moment to compose yourself and think about what you want to say. Going into it with a level head and without anger and judgment will help you get a better result. Your loved one is likely already aware of how others may perceive their cocaine use and can become defensive and unwilling to talk if you confirm their fears.

Remind them how much you care and want what’s best for them. You can support and be there for them without encouraging or enabling their cocaine use. Offer your help and talk with them about their relationship with cocaine, like why they seek it out or if they picture it always being in their lives. Go into the conversation with an open mind and you’re far more likely to succeed in getting them the help they need.
