Slang words have been around for millennia, if not longer. Different generations craft their own unique words that go in and out of style. You can probably think of a few words you used to use when you were younger that now make you laugh.
Did you know that this same pattern also applies to drugs?
That’s right. There is an ever-evolving list of terminology used specifically involving drugs and the act of engaging with them. You may think it wouldn’t be important to recognize these terms, but spotting the street names for meth could alert you to a loved one who’s in need of support.
Over 43,000 Oregon residents, aged 12 and older, reported trying meth at least once in the past year. That’s almost half the population of Bend, OR alone. Today we’re going to talk about the street names for meth, why you need to know them, and what you can do if you hear a loved one using them.
When talking about a “street name” in reference to substance use, we’re not talking about the name of a road. No, street names are slang terms, or nicknames, given to drugs like meth that are used in casual conversation instead of the name of the drug itself.
People who regularly engage with substances like meth are aware that it’s illegal and that people may judge them or be upset if they find out about their meth consumption. This is why street names were made, in order to covertly discuss substance use.
The street names for any given substance will vary not only from substance to substance but even just from city to city.
Many forms of street names are seen across the country, and even across the globe, but some individuals may have their own unique street names that aren’t easily found online.
So, keep that in mind when reading this list. It’s not fully exhaustive and street names always have the potential to change.
The most common street names for meth include:
There are two primary forms of methamphetamine: meth and crystal meth. You may wonder if crystal meth has its own, unique street name.
More often than not, the answer is no. Crystal meth and meth are very similar and have a lot of overlap in what they’re called. While there are some unique names, such as hot ice, quartz, and stovetop, names like shards and tina are seen in reference to normal meth, too.
There are many things, however, that influence the formation of street names. Most often the physical appearance of a substance is involved in how a street name is made. Other things such as common forms of consumption, how it makes you feel, and comparisons to other substances are also sources of street names.
Take the street name “glass” as an example. Methamphetamine is usually semi-transparent in appearance and often looks like small shards of glass, hence the name. Understanding how street names come about can help you identify ones that weren’t on our list above if you encountered them.
In this day and age, emojis have become a frequently used form of communication. Just like slang, different emojis can have additional meanings depending on the context. In this instance, there are many different emoji and emoji combos that have been found in discussions about substance use and meth.
Here are some of the most well-known examples of emoji street names:
Not all illicit drugs have a prescription form, but methamphetamine does.
The medication is known as Desoxyn. It is a form of methamphetamine and falls under the category of a “controlled substance” by the FDA. As it’s a stimulant, this drug is most often used to help treat those with ADHD. In rarer cases, it may be prescribed to help with narcolepsy and even weight loss.
In order to legally obtain a medication like Desoxyn, you must have a prescription from a doctor.
As we mentioned earlier, the street names we’ve provided in this article are nowhere near exhaustive. They’re just the most well-known and well-documented street names for meth. Due to the widespread usage of the internet, street names are more likely to spread and evolve than ever before.
This means that it’s impossible to always know every single street name that’s ever been used for meth. If every street name was publicly available, they wouldn’t be very effective street names.
Even so, that doesn’t mean that you can’t properly identify a street name that you don’t know but that you hear in conversation.
The most important thing you can do to identify a street name is to listen for context. Does it make more sense to replace that word or words with “meth?” Was the conversation held in a more secretive way? Has your loved one been showing any other signs of meth use?
Use your brain, but don’t jump to conclusions.
If your loved one is using street names for meth, it’s more important to think over how you want to talk to them about it than to jump the gun.
People who’re engaging with meth understand that society and others around them may judge or look down upon them for what they’re doing. This can contribute to many of the behavioral shifts that come with a meth use disorder, such as pulling away from loved ones, mood shifts, and paranoia.
When you approach your loved one about the topic, make sure you have a level head and have considered what you want to say to them. It’s important to remind them that you care and only want what’s best for them.
Be prepared to listen and withhold judgment. Tell them you want to see them have a happy and healthy future and offer your support in finding healing.
Many times this kindness and compassion can go a long way. You can support and love someone without enabling them. Offer help in researching facilities or even offer to drive them to their first appointment, if that’s what they want.
You both can do this. Help and healing are always an option.
